THE CAT'S MEOW: What's Good on the Shelf This Week- #166 ____________________________________________________________________
Reviews by John Norris, November 10, 2009

CARS: RADIATOR SPRINGS #2 (All Ages)

Alan J. Porter (w); Silvio Spotti (p/i); Flavio B. Silva (c); Deron Bennett (l); covers by Allen Gladfelter

Publisher: BOOM! Kids

Format: four-issue miniseries

Concept: Lightning McQueen is hanging out with his friends in Radiator Springs when he realizes that everyone knows his story, but he doesn't know anyone else's. McQueen wants to know how his friends ended up in Radiator Springs...and why they decided to stay.

In this issue : Issue #2 explores Fillmore and Sarge's unlikely friendship. Even though one's a hippie and the other is a military man, the two are inseparable! (from boom-kids.com)

Review: This issue takes us back to 1967, the Summer of Love, when Fillmore and his friends are in Radiator Springs having their own “peace and love” festival which turns into a yearly event—until it gets so big that help is needed. Enter Sarge, who immediately establishes his authority, and whose life is soon saved by Fillmore. Porter perfectly captures the duo's unlikely friendship, and there are some wonderful panels of Sarge, and some psychedelic ones of Fillmore.

MONSTERS, INC. LAUGH FACTORY #2: “Fear Factory” (All Ages)

Paul Benjamin (w); Amy Mebberson (p/i/c); Troy Peteri (l); covers by Mebberson

Publisher: BOOM! Kids

Format: four-issue miniseries

Concept: Sulley, Mike and Boo are back, and they are sure to generate plenty of chuckles for the Monsters, Inc. laugh factory!

In this issue: When Monsters, Inc. starts losing productivity, a new energy crisis could be in the offing for Monsteropolis! Mike and Sully soon discover that someone is scaring kids targeted for laugh energy...and frightened kids don't have much to laugh about! If Mike and Sully can't stop this menace, Monsters, Inc will be out of business! (from boom-kids.com)

Review: Whether or not Mike's comedy material is really any good is up to you to decide. But the kids don't seem to think so lately…in fact, NONE of the monsters are able to make the kids laugh! But after being scared by…well, I can't give away that information, but a familiar foe returns, and he wants revenge! Mebberson's art is just wonderful, especially of Mike and his antics. And Benjamin does a nice job

By thy side,

John “Figaro” Norris
