Web Comics? What's That?

Free comics, that's what. That's right. There are free comics on the internet just waiting for you and the young people in your life to access them. Some are daily strips in a similar style to those that you would find in the newspaper, but others are full comics that you would usually have to PAY for. I am going to share with you a couple that have come to my attention over the past few days.

Inverloch is….well, I'll let the creator/author/illustrator, Sarah Ellerton, tell you the basic plot summary (from her site):

The story of Inverloch centers around a young man named Acheron, from a horned wolf-like race called the da'kor. After a chance encounter with an elf, he finds himself setting out on a seemingly innocent mission - that of trying to locate Kayn'dar, another elf who has been missing for the past twelve years.

Meeting up with new friends and companions along the way, he quickly begins to learn that the world is not quite the peaceful place he believed it to be - embroiled with prejudice, racial segregation, and hidden danger. And the truth behind Kayn'dar's disappearance is something none of the party would ever expect...

So far there are nearly 600 beautiful story pages on her site with more going up every few days (haven't read them all yet, but I'm working on it). If you like what you see you can purchase the first volume of Inverloch at comic shops and some bookstores. The publisher lists it as an all ages book. I think it would be good for 9+, but it is free online, so you can see if it is the right reading level for yourself.

To quote the web site pf Scott Christian Sava, the creator/author/illustrator of our next web comic: The Dreamland Chronicles is an Epic Fantasy comic book series that is now online daily.

Ever since he could remember, Alexander was a dreamer. Every night when he would go to sleep he would enter a world called Dreamland. Nightly he would have adventures with his very best friends, Kiwi the fairy, Paddington Rumblebottom the rock boy, and Nastajia the princess of elves. Together they would fly on winged horses, swim with mermaids, battle nightmare pirates, and chase after one eyed giants.

On his 12 th birthday, while in Dreamland Alexander uncovers a lost tomb. Inside he finds a sword, and guarding it…a dragon. Before the dragon can kill him, Alexander wakes up…never to dream again.

Now…eight years later, Alexander finds a pendant that lets him travels back to the place of his childhood dreams. Rediscovering this magical world for the first time since his youth he meets his childhood friends who are also now grown up.

This story is a lot of fun (136 pages so far, with more going up regularly). The CG art will likely be very appealing to your kids (very Shrek looking). There are no collected versions of this series, so online is the only place you can enjoy it for now.

I hope you enjoy these two books. If you have already found a great web comic that you thing the readers here would be interested, let me know at comicsintheclassroom @ gmail.com
